Catherine of Saxony, Electress of Brandenburg

Catherine of Saxony (* 1421, † August 23, 1476 in Berlin) was a princess of Saxony and by marriage Electress of Brandenburg.

Life

Catherine was a daughter of the Elector Frederick I of Saxony (1370-1428) from his marriage to Catherine (1395-1442), daughter of Duke Henry I of Brunswick.

Catherine married on June 11, 1446 in Wittenberg Elector Frederick II of Brandenburg ( 1413-1471 ). Frederick had already advertised in vain to Catherine. The promise of marriage was finally part of a contract, the beilegte the wars in Lusatia between Brandenburg and Saxony and an alliance of the two countries sealed. However, the marriage proved unhappy. Frederick had numerous affairs, his son Erasmus was born out of wedlock.

The last years of their marriage, the couple spent entirely separate; while Frederick lived in Franconia, Catherine remained in the marrow.

With Friedrich they had three children:
