Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth Catocala conversa is 50 to 54 millimeters. The species belongs to the middle-sized ribbon types. Their forewings show different shades of brown, which makes them at roof-like folded wings hardly of the bark substrate on which they rest preferred to stand out. Root and upper middle are pale gray-brown, dyed the Saumfeld dark brown. Between the inner transverse lines, and between the outer transverse line and wavy auburn tints to take off. All areas around the flaws are dusted dark brown. Occasionally also appear copies, which have a more gray or yellow-brown staining. The hind wings have a strong yellow to orange- yellow color, a wide, black-brown exterior, a narrower, slightly wavy center band and alternating yellow and dark brown fringe with a slightly elongated white yellow area near the apex.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg is very flat. It has weak, slightly undulating longitudinal ribs and a reddish-yellow color, which is sometimes brightened with a narrow white fascia. The caterpillars are brown to almost black. They are up to 60 millimeters long, and have bright red brown spots and poorly developed, pale stripes. The doll has an elongated shape, a long, wrinkled cremaster, which also has some longer and shorter bristles.

Similar Species

The similar species Catocala hymenaea, Catocala Catocala diversa nymphagoga and are much smaller. From about the same size Catocala Catocala conversa Nymphaea is distinguished by the lack of a yellow spot in the dark outer band of the hindwing. The also like Yellow Underwing (Catocala fulminea ) differs by a very strongly dentate transverse line of the front wing and a strongly curved inward dark average binder of the hind wings. All of the above species also show a less distinctive drawing of the front wings.

Geographical distribution and habitat

In Catocala conversa is one of North West Africa through southern Europe widespread species, the north to the south of France, the canton of Valais in Switzerland, the Südalpentälern and Lake Garda area, to the southeast of Austria (Carinthia, Styria and Burgenland), the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania and southern Russia forced out. In the Alps it is found up to 800 meters in height. It also occurs on the islands of Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Crete. In addition, it is known from Asia Minor, Armenia and the Caucasus. The animals prefer wooded areas with oak trees.

Way of life

The moths fly in June-September and visit artificial light sources. On occasion, the moths by means of their proboscis tree sap and can be lured with a bait. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of oak (Quercus ). The species overwinters as an egg.

Threats and conservation

The species is not native to Germany and has been reported only from Saxony as Irrgast. Older information on the occurrence in Baden- Württemberg are probably due to errors.
