Catopuma

A golden cat is a medium-sized wild cat of the rain forests of Africa and Asia. There are two kinds of gold cats: African Golden Cat ( Profelis ) and Asiatic Golden Cats ( Catopuma ). Previously all gold cats were placed in the genus Profelis, but for new knowledge, the similarities are purely external, and African and Asian Golden Cats are not related closely to each other. Golden cats are therefore not monophyletic.

The following species are referred to as the golden cats:

  • Genus Profelis African Golden Cat ( Profelis aurata )
  • Asiatic golden cat ( Catopuma temmincki )
  • Borneo Gold Cat ( Catopuma badia )
