Caudron C.460

The Caudron c.460 was an aircraft of the French manufacturer Caudron Issy -les -Moulineaux ( Seine). Variants of this design were the Caudron C.450 with fixed landing gear and the Caudron C.461 development.

It was a single-seat, single-engine low-wing monoplane with retractable tailwheel, which had been specially built for speed races.

The design goes back to the Caudron C.362 that could win a second place in the 1933 Coupe de la Meurthe German race. The designer Marcel Riffard improved the design and built a retractable landing gear. A total of at least three of these aircraft were built to be used in the Coupe German 1934 can. The machine consisted largely of wood. The planking of the hull top and the bow consisted of magnesium sheet, the rest was covered with canvas. The upper part of the vertical tail and the wings were clad with wood. The zweiholmige wing had a section thickness of 13% and was grown with a setting angle of 2 °. The joints of ailerons and flaps were attached to the auxiliary spar. Since the trim when actuating the flaps changed greatly, the tailplane was automatically adjusted. According to the intended use of a six-cylinder in-line engine of Peugeot with a capacity of 8 liters and an output of 300 hp at 2900 min -1 (short-term 325 hp at 3250 min-1 were possible) selected as a drive. These Displacement size was specified in the competition rules as the upper limit. More specific design features were next to the retractable landing gear using a Verstellluftschraube with two positions, which was operated airstream depends on a baffle plate, and a low-resistance surface oil cooler under the engine. But that supplied by Charlestop Retracts not satisfied, so that the machines in the race of 1934 had to start with a fixed and faired landing gear. The built at this time as Caudron C.450 design which from the outset had a fixed landing gear, could it enter in the list of winners. A c.460 with Albert Monville at the wheel came in third place. The achieved speeds of over 400 km / h gave rise to the hope to be able to provide you with a specially prepared machine the existing world record for land planes.

For this purpose the Charlestop suspension against one of Messier was exchanged and installed in the factory number 690.7 a Renault 428 engine with 370 hp at 3200 min -1. With this machine, Raymond Delmotte launched on September 25, 1934 in Istres to a successful world record flight. He reached a speed of 505.848 km / h Achieved in 1935 with two 330 hp continuous duty placed 8 -liter engines provided machines at the Coupe a German double victory, which was completed by the third place a C.450. During the year, more world records were flown over various distances, with an additional oil cooler was mounted next to the engine on long journeys. The factory number 690.9 with Michel Detroyat, the chief pilot of Morane- Saulnier was in 1936 moved to the USA to participate in the National Air Races. The c.460 could be both the Greve Trophy and the Thompson Trophy win, even though they possessed against the second- placed for less than half its engine performance.

The serial numbers 690.7 and 690.8 were then modified for participation in the German Coupe 1936 bow, cockpit and fin .. These machines were designated Caudron C.461, however, remained unsuccessful. However, it served as the basis for the further development Caudron C.560.
