Cauterets

Cauterets is a commune with 1133 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Midi-Pyrénées region in the Hautes -Pyrenees. It is located in the arrondissement of Argelès -Gazost and the Canton of Argelès -Gazost, about 30 km southwest of the famous pilgrimage town of Lourdes.

Mayor ( maire ) since 2008, Michel Aubry.

Cauterets is known mainly for its numerous hot springs that are used today for medical applications. Furthermore, it was developed the environment of the community through the creation of ski slopes, ski trails and a cable car for the winter sports.

Among the better known attractions include the National Park Pyrenees and the Pont d' Espagne, a 4 km southwest of Cauterets preferred bridge over the Gave du Marcadau.

Literary mention is Cauterets in Heinrich Heine 's epic poem Atta Troll.
