Cavalli Islands

The Cavalli Islands are a small group of islands in Whangaroa on the east coast of Northland in the North Island of New Zealand

The islands are located 5 km east of Matauri Bay. The archipelago consists of the island Motukawanui (3.40 km ²) and the small islands and Motutapere, Panaki, Nukutaunga, Motuharakeke, Haraweka and Motukawaiti. The main island is a nature reserve, some of the smaller islands are privately owned.

On 2 December 1987, after the bombing of a French secret agent no longer economical to repair Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior was sunk between Matauri Bay and the Cavalli Islands to serve as a diving destination and fish shelter.
