Cayo Sur

Cayo Sur is a small uninhabited island in the Caribbean Sea about 70 miles off the coast of Honduras and Nicaragua.

The Cay is not larger than two football fields and was disputed between the two countries until 2001. The surrounding waters are rich fishing grounds and oil deposits. 2000 accused Nicaragua Honduras there had troops stationed on the small island. A Honduran diplomat was quoted as saying that the country has four cats on the island. Later, the presence of the military was confirmed by the Honduran Foreign Minister Roberto Flores. From Honduras Military attachés posted again denied this. In 2001 the two countries signed an agreement in the presence of representatives of the Organization of American States to the pacification of the conflict. The case ended up before the International Court of Justice unanimously on 8 October 2007, the sovereignty of Honduras over Cayo Sur and three other Cays, Bobel, Savanna, Port Royal, confirmed.
