CD Video

CD Video (also known as CDV, CD -V, or CD V) was a format that was introduced in 1987. It combines the technologies of compact discs and laser discs.

CD V- singles had the same size as regular audio CDs, and could be played on CD players. In contrast to CD, the new format could record sound only audio information for a period of 20 minutes. In addition, CDV also contained up to five minutes analog video information including a digital CD audio that could be played on newer laser disc players that were compatible with the CDV format. One of the first laser disc player, who could play the new format, the CLD -1010 Pioneer was built in 1987.

In addition, there was with the CD -V EP with a diameter of 20 cm a format with twice 20 minutes the picture and sound and a CD- V- LP with a diameter of 30 cm for 60 minutes twice picture and sound. Corresponding players and the larger discs were from mid-1989 for around 1,500 DM in trade.

CD -Video discs have a distinctive golden color, which distinguishes it from the ordinary silver audio CDs.

The CDV - format should not be confused with the digital MPEG-based video CD format, which until a few years later, in 1993, came out.

The new format was only a few years remain on the market, and finally disappeared in 1991. The target group were teenagers watched the music videos on MTV. However, few of them knew each other with laser discs, and even fewer had CDV -compatible players.
