Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh

Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh [ o ː caɾwaɫ̪ dA ɫ̪i ː ] ( born February 12, 1911 in Bray, Ireland, † 21 March 1978 in Dublin, Republic of Ireland) was an Irish judge from 1974 to 1976, the fifth President of Ireland.

Biography

Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh studied at University College Dublin in 1931 and earned a degree in Celtic studies. From 1931 to 1942 he was editor of The Irish Press in the Irish language. In 1935 he became a lawyer, in 1945, then Attorney General of Ireland recently. He exercised this office from 1945 to 1948 and from 1951 to 1953. In 1953 he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court, from 1961 to 1973 he was Chief Justice ( Chief Justice ) of the Supreme Court After he was from 1973 to 1974 Judge at the European Court of Justice ( ECJ) and most recently since January 1974 President of the First chamber.

After the death of Erskine Hamilton Childers 1974, he succeeded him as President of Ireland. This was followed by fierce political clashes with Defence Paddy Donegan because of the Emergency Powers Act. He held this law to combat the terror of the IRA unconstitutional and used his official powers to delay its decision. In 1976 he resigned from his post.
