Cedarhurst is a suburb of New York City, but is part of the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County. Cedarhurst is located on the south shore of Long Iceland, New York, in the United States.

In the United States Census 2000, the city had 6164 inhabitants.

History

The Village was incorporated in 1910. It is together with the place and the villages of Lawrence Woodmere, Inwood, "The Hewlett's ", which consists of the hamlets of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor Hewlett Neck and Hewlett, and Woods Burgh part of the " Five Towns ".

The former name of Cedarhurst is Ocean Point. The place was built in 1896 connected to the railway network, which provided for easy accessibility, particularly the Rockaway Hunting Club, which was established in 1878 in Cedarhurst. A post office was opened in 1884, and Ocean Point was renamed Cedarhurst what happened partly at the request of the hunting association.

For many years, the Central Avenue, the main business center of the area, as a kind of Rodeo Drive was considered Long Iceland, since there were numerous high-priced shops and boutiques. With the growth of the local Jewish Orthodox community today offer many shops and restaurants of goods for the people. Because believing Jews not go shopping on Shabbat, many shops are closed on Saturday for pedestrian traffic for the stores that are open on Saturday reduced.

At the 2000 census Cedarhurst had 6,164 inhabitants, 2,289 households, and 1,636 families. The population density was 1,343 inhabitants per km2.

31.5% of households had children under the age of 18, 59.1 % of the residents were married and 28.5% were singles. The average household size was 2.69 persons and the average family size was 3.25 persons.

In the last 20 years, many Jewish families moved to Cedarhurst. Also Italian-Americans represented 15.3 % of the population, Russians 10.5% and Poland with 9.7%.

The Cedarhurst train station is by the " Far Rockaway " branch of Long Iceland Railroad operated by the Penn Station in Midtown and the Flatbush Avenue Station in Brooklyn are accessible.

Security

The Nassau County Police Department is responsible for Cedarhurst and the greater part of Nassau County. Cedarhurst is located in the fourth district police headquarters.

Cedarhurst is operated by the Lawrence - Cedarhurst Fire Department ( LCFD ), which consists of 80 volunteer firefighters and is responsible for the protection of places of Lawrence and Cedarhurst, as well as the North and East Lawrence Fire District. The LCFD also helps with other emergencies such as car accidents or mishaps on the Atlantic Beach Bridge. The head of the LCFD is Michael P. Sasso.

  • Cedarhurst served in the book and film The Seduction of Joe Tynan ( The Seduction of Joe Tynan ) as the home of U.S. Senator Joe Tynan.
  • Parts of the film Married to the Mob, most famously the opening scene at the train station were filmed in Cedarhurst.
  • The city is wrongly mentioned in the movie City by the Sea (2002), as is said that Long Beach Cedarhurst had defeated in a football game ( correctly is the High School in Lawrence).
  • On May 11 and 12, 2009 Jerry Seinfeld filmed in Cedarhurst a commercial for the Greater Australian bank.
