Ceefax

Ceefax [ si ː fæks ] (after eng. Lake facts, "facts see ") was the teletext of the BBC.

The system was announced in October 1972. After test pages 1973 and 1974 Ceefax began on 23 September 1974 as the first teletext system in the world with 30 pages. Originally it was only intended to provide closed captioning. However, it was soon extended to other areas.

Soon the system of international de-facto standard and displaced systems such as the French Antiope system was. In Germany it was introduced under the name of video text by ARD and ZDF on June 1, 1980 in a field trial.

From 1983-1989 beamed from Ceefax programs for the BBC Micro PC.

Apart from minor changes, such as the introduction of color (1976) and the four colored shortcut buttons (1990), the technology has remained virtually the same. Ceefax was now only broadcast analog, digital programs showed instead the BBC Red Button. Ceefax was - off on 23 October 2012 - along with all analog programs.
