Ceiba (Puerto Rico)

Ceiba is a city in the northeast of the U.S. foreign territory Puerto Rico. It is located south of Fajardo, and east of Río Grande north of Naguabo. The city is divided into eight districts, where about 14,000 people live.

History

Ceiba was established on 7 April 1838 by Luis de la Cruz. It was named the city from the kapok tree ( Ceiba pentandra ), which grows on the island and in metropolitan areas Ceiba.

Geography

In the Ceiba Ceiba Forest, which stretches along the east coast of the island up to Fajardo is. 95 % of the forest are classified as mangroves. The forest is home to various species of birds, turtles and manatees. It is crossed by, among other things Daguao River, from Demajagua River and the Fajardo River.

Policy

Current mayor of the city is Angelo Cruz Ramos, who was elected in 2012. He belongs to the nation's significant Partido Nuevo Progresista. The city belongs to the Senator District VIII, which is represented in national affairs by two senators.

Flag

The design and the colors of the city flag are taken from the coat of arms. The flag is divided into two halves, the right half is colored green, the left side red. In the center is a golden trefoil cross in the red colored box.

The coat of arms contains a shield centered in Spanish shape with rounded base. In the upper third of the shield are a golden Kleeblatkreuz in the middle and two outer golden flowers, all on red ground. In the lower two-thirds is the Kapok tree which gave the city its name, on golden background. The crest consists of a crown of gold, which is formed by three castle towers with connecting walls.

Tourism

One of the tourist highlights of the city is the historical city walls from the time of the establishment of the city. Moreover, an earlier station of the U.S. Navy, which is closed now accessible. There are famous and popular beach areas such as the Los Machos Beach or the Media Mouth Beach to the coastal strip.
