Geography

The community is surrounded by the Hochcevennen in the far west of the department, in a small valley on the border of Allier. The town borders the neighboring municipalities Langogne and Saint- Étienne -de- Lugdarès, nearest large town is Mende in Lozère 36 miles away. The rivers Allier and Espezonnette traverse the remote and sparsely populated municipality.

History

Cellier -du -Luc means in German translated by Luc pantry. Thus, the neighboring community Luc is meant in the Lozere department, whose inhabitants had founded in former times a small secluded settlement at a safe distance to the location in the hills of the Cevennes, in order there to put enough food reserves for wars and bad harvests. It evolved over time, the current community Cellier -du -Luc.

In the Middle Ages the small settlement was therefore administered jointly by the Diocese of Viviers, a sub- delegation of the Bas -Vivarais and the Bailiwick of Villeneuve -de-Berg.

Culture and sights

Cellier -du -Luc is home to a small church in the Gothic style, was built in the 19th century and is known for its differently designed facade of gneiss, basalt and pozzolan. In addition, the town has a medieval bridge and an old stone oven, which is used for baking bread today. He is the last remaining relic of the function of the church as a storehouse of the surrounding villages.
