Cengiz or Genghis or Chinggis is a Turkish- Mongol male first name and surname is also found in all other Turkic peoples. He is as strong, unyielding and courageous. Another meaning is the sea or the ocean. In these meanings Cengiz is a variant of Deniz.

Contrary to the widespread interpretation that this name has been traced back to the Mongol ruler Genghis Khan, this name was also to be found before its time. So there was already before Genghis Kahn- time (1155-1227) with the Seljuk Zengi Ata-beg (1087-1146) another personality to bear this name. This Zengi is another variant of Cengiz.
