The Puente Centenario ( German: Century Bridge, English: Centennial Bridge ) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Panama Canal.

Inaugurated in 2004, the bridge is located at the Culebra Cut, near the Pedro Miguel lock, 15 kilometers north of the Puente de las Américas and 22 kilometers from Panama City. The most important road link across the Channel is the known Panamericana.

Planning and participating companies

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas Panamanian (MOP, German: Ministry of Public Works ) began in November 2000 with a tender for the construction of a new canal crossing. The building should be completed in 29 months, to be inaugurated on the 90th anniversary of the first ship's passage in 1914 on August 15, 2004 can. In March 2002, a consortium of TY Lin International and the Louis Berger Group the contract to design slammed. The final design was awarded after disagreements between TY Lin and the MOP to the office Leonhardt, Andrae and partners. The actual construction was for the Bilfinger Berger Civil GmbH in collaboration with the Australian subsidiary Baulderstone Hornibrook. The Bridge

The Puente Centenario is a 34.10 meter wide six-lane cable-stayed bridge with a total length of 1052 meters. The main span of the bridge over the Panama Canal is 420 meters with a clear headroom of 80 meters. The roadway of concrete box girders supported by steel cables to two 184 -meter high concrete pylons. To create the bridge around 66,000 m3 of concrete, 12,000 tons of steel reinforcement plus 1,000 tons of steel structure parts, and 1,400 tons were processed on cables. During the construction of earthworks were in a capacity of about 100,000 m3. After 27 Baumonaten the bridge was completed and it was opened as scheduled on 15 August 2004.

Financing

The capital to build the bridge of about 120 million U.S. dollars was raised by the Panamanian government. In addition a loan of 50 million U.S. dollars from the European Investment Bank ( EIB) was added. This is designed for a repayment of 20 years with five years grace period and guaranteed by the European Community.
