Center for International Forestry Research

The Center for International Forestry Research ( CIFOR, free translation: Center for International Forestry Science ) is one of 15 specialized research centers ( Future Harvest Centres ) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR ) and has its headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia. It was founded in 1993 as a consequence of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED ).

The CIFOR has set itself the goal to promote forest science and to support those groups that are directly dependent on forest products. Goal is sustainable, ie both intergenerational and intragenerativ equitable and ecologically sustainable, forestry to promote.

Task

The task of the CIFOR is to secure the livelihoods of populations that are dependent on the forest. Here, the forest is recognized as an outstanding ecosystem, depending on the vegetation zone may be labile, more or less. The center of the task sees the CIFOR in the protection of the remaining rainforests, but especially in their sustainable management. The three main tasks are:

  • The promotion and improvement of forest science and introduction of the results in the ( sustainable ) forestry
  • The promotion of technologies and creation of technologies for achieving sustainability in forest area and timber
  • Promotion of the local partners to increase the efficiency of silviculture

Implementation

To realize this goal, the written CIFOR Criteria and Indicators ( C & I ), which will serve as a basis for local approaches to sustainable development. This is then often in the (new) certification measures. The CIFOR Criteria and Indicators follows with this new development assistance strategies.

The CIFOR has about 150 employees. In addition to the headquarters in Bogor, there are branches in Cameroon, Brazil and Zimbabwe. The CIFOR works in around 30 countries with about 300 researchers in universities and other research groups and organizations.
