Center of Advanced European Studies and Research

The center of advanced european studies and research ( caesar ) is a Foundation for the Promotion of Applied Research, based in Bonn. The foundation operates the same caesar research center based in Bonn.

Caesar is a private foundation whose capital comes from public funds. Out of the income of the endowment of the same research center is operated with headquarters in Bonn. The capital of 394 million euros was donated by the contracts due to the Berlin / Bonn Act by the federal government and the state of North Rhine -Westphalia. The research took in 1999 to its operation in 2003 and moved into its current headquarters in Bonn Rhine floodplain. Founding director was Karl -Heinz Hoffmann, who established the Foundation and the research center from 1999 to 2005. In 2008, the line to Benjamin Kaupp was transferred.

Structure

The Board of Trustees of caesar is formed by representatives of the federal government, the State of North Rhine -Westphalia, the city of Bonn and representatives from science and industry. An appointee by the Foundation Board consisting of the Scientific Directors and the Executive Director, to-day management of the research center and is the legal representative of the Foundation. An advisory council advises the Foundation on scientific issues.

Caesar is associated with the Max Planck Society ( MPG). This is a particularly close connection between scientific caesar and the Max Planck Society circumscribed. The President of the Max Planck Society is Chairman of the Board; his deputy is the Vice President of the Max Planck Society for the Biology and Medicine Section. In addition, six directors of the Max Planck institutes members of the Foundation Council.

The directors of the research center caesar are appointed according to the rules of the Max Planck Society. They are scientific members of the Max Planck Society.

Research

Caesar conducts research in the field of neuroscience with modern photonic, molecular biological, chemical and materials science methods. Above all optical methods for the study and control of the brain to be harnessed. It is thematically under construction. Priorities are:

  • The study of sensory processes,
  • Research into the molecular causes of neurodegenerative diseases,
  • The use of microscopic and spectroscopic methods in neuroscience ( "Neuro photonics " ) in order to elucidate the functioning of neural networks and to allow a "soft " control.

The Bonn chemist Michael Famulok was appointed Max Planck Fellow at the caesar research center. He will be leading a working group that deals with the structure determination of biomolecules and the chemical biology of photo - activatable substances. In 2004, the engineer and computer Erwin Keeve founded with his caesar Working Group, the medical technology company Sicat GmbH & Co. KG and Hicat GmbH. The Bonn-based technology companies generate today with 70 employees and annual sales of over 12 million euros.
