Central Line (Sweden)

The railway line Sundsvall- Storlien is a 358 km long railway line between Sundsvall and Storlien in Sweden on the border with Norway. It was opened in sections 1874-1882.

On the Norwegian side designated by Jernbaneverket as Meråkerbanen railway Trondheim Storlien follows, the Swedish section is now called the Trafikverket as Mittbanan. The Swedish name alludes to the course of the route near the geographical center of Sweden near the breakpoint Torpshammar to.

The section Sundsvall- Storlien is electrified. The track is a single track; only the portion Moradal - Bracke is expanded to double track due to the higher traffic density.

History

Sundsvall- Torpshammars Järnväg

The oldest section of the route is the vice spurts railway Sundsvall- Torpshammar. The 60 -kilometer-long piece with a track width of 1067 mm was built by the private railway company Sundsvall Järnvägsaktiebolag and put into operation in 1874. In addition to the main line about three -kilometer branch line Matfors - Vattjom was created.

Norrländska Tvärbanan

Shortly after the opening of the STJ, the Swedish government decided to extend the route to the west over Bracke and Östersund to the Norwegian border - but in standard gauge. In 1878 was the section Torpshammar - Ånge - Bracke of the now so-called Norrländska tvärbana which, taken " Norrland cross- train" in operation a year later reached the railway Östersund. 1882 The last remaining section was inaugurated on the Swedish side between Östersund and the Norwegian border at Storlien. Meråkerbahn

Around the same time as the construction of the Norrländska tvärbana was supported by the Norwegian government - Norway was in union with Sweden - the construction of the Meråkerbahn of Trondheim on Meråker driven by Storlien. The line was opened on 17 October 1881. Together they form a so-called Mellanriksbana. These are routes that connect Norway and Sweden or Sweden and Finland.

Connecting other rail lines

For now, the railway line was a stand-alone operation with no connection to the rest of the Norwegian and Swedish railway network. 1881, however, only three years after the Norrländska Tvärbanan, the Norra stambanan reached from the south Ånge; of Bracke from it was extended in 1883 towards the floor as Stambanan genome övre Norrland. The Inland Railway in Östersund and Brunflo was only in 1911/12 and 1916 respectively connected. From Sundsvall from the onward journey by rail on the Ostkustbana until 1927 was possible.

Electrification

The line was electrified between 1939 and 1945.

Current operating

Since November 2013, the through train service is interrupted to Norway. Between the Storlien station and the Norwegian border, there has been subsidence and there is still the danger of a landslide. In May 2014, to reckon with the commissioning of a signal-dependent warning system. After the evaluation of test drilling is to decide whether the distance can be stabilized or whether an entirely new route has to be built.

Transport

In transport services between Heimdal, Trondheim and Östersund since September 22, 2002 two daily train pairs of Nabotåget, until June 2007 operated by the Norwegian NSB and the Swedish Länstrafiken i Jämtland County. Long-distance traffic

SJ X2000 offers, InterCity and night train connections on the route from Sundsvall to Östersund and partly on to Åre and Storlien Duved. Furthermore, operates during the winter season, twice a week, a night train pair of Veolia Transport Malmo Stockholm after Duved. Other trains use the track section Ånge - Bracke.

Tourist traffic

The section between Brunflo and Östersund is used between mid-June and early September of the trains running for tourist purposes Inland Railway. In winter bring various charter and special trains like the Åretåget ski tourists to the ski centers near the Norwegian- Swedish border, including to Åre and Duved.

Freight traffic

The railway line Sundsvall- Storlien is an important route in the Swedish transport network.
