Central Stadium (Tbilisi)

The Central Stadium (Georgian ცენტრალური სტადიონი ), actually Lawrenti - Beria - Dinamo Stadium (Georgian ლავრენტი ბერიას სახელობის დინამოს სტადიონი ), was a football stadium in Tbilisi. It was the first major stadium in Georgia and stood on the site of today's Boris Paitschadse stadium. The Central Stadium, Tbilisi was the home ground of the club Dinamo Tbilisi. It was from 1932 to 1935 by architect Archil Kurdiani configured both built and is considered one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture of the period.

The original central stadium could accommodate 23,000 spectators. To increase this number, metal structures were in 1956 again by Archil Kurdiani added. So the expanded stadium took 35,000 seats for the viewers.

In the 1960s and 1970s, a new stadium was designed by Archil Kurdiani, Gia Kurdiani and by the constructor Shalva Gasaschwili planned. This project was realized by the architect Gia Kurdiani. The older, architecturally rich building was demolished and a new stadium, which is known under the name Boris Paitschadse Stadium today. It was opened as Vladimir Ilyich Lenin - stadium with a UEFA Cup match against Cardiff City on 29 September 1976.
