The Italian Centro Studi sul Federalismo, Centre for Studies on Federalism ( English) or center of Federalism Studies ( German ), which was established in November 2000, is a study and research on federalism, in terms of its theoretical and practical phenomenon in context of political theory and the institutional systems of the modern state.

Based on these criteria, the CSF directs his attention to the interstate, macro-regional and global dimension of federalism and in particular on regional integration in today's era of globalization. The research activities mainly concern the history and the cultures of Europe, the path towards its unity and future prospects.

Seat and Organization

The CSF has its seat at the Collegio Carlo Alberto di Moncalieri (Turin ) and is a research institution that has emerged thanks to the collaboration between the University of Pavia and University of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo, the University of Milan has joined afterwards. The Piedmont Research Institute pursues the principles enshrined in its statutes designed to foster scientific research in the field of research on federalism and coordinated. The center cooperates not only with the aforementioned partner universities, but also with other universities, with Italian and international research centers, and public and private institutions who wish to deepen their knowledge and application possibilities of federalism. Research activities

One of the main objectives of the CSF include the promotion of knowledge of the various aspects of federalism, the stimulation of public debate through publications of relevant studies and research, the impetus for researchers and intellectuals to contribute to the reflection on European and international issues. The documents, which are written within the framework of the research activities ( Research Papers ) depend Although the academic world, but thanks to the absolute relevance of the treated aspects and topics of great interest also in the diplomatic milieu, in politics and in various professional areas. The research activity of the CSF also includes various publishing projects under the thematic deepening, the review and monitoring of global phenomena in connection with federal processes of regional integration and international democracy. Among them:

  • Set up online magazine with the goal of an open forum about the federalism debate at all levels of government: Perspectives on Federalism at sub-national, national and supra- national level, both regionally and globally.
  • Bibliographical Bulletin on Federalism: is published three times a year online and provides an overview of products with respect to the federalism that have been published in about 700 scientific journals in Italian, English, French, German and Spanish.
  • International Democracy Watch: portal, which aims to collect a set of data to compare and analyze to check the progress and development of democracy in international institutions on the basis of regular monitoring.
  • Operating within the European Security and Defence Policy: investigation with the aim to collect useful information to provide a comparative analysis of the EU's military, civilian and police missions under the ESDP in 2003.
  • Observatory on fiscal federalism: serves to deepen the development of the restructuring of public finance in Italy and the consequences of constitutional reform in the context of fiscal federalism.

Cultural Activities

The CSF also organizes conferences and seminars in collaboration with other research institutes and facilities that are devoted to examine specific subjects or the presentation of books. Some bands are issued directly from the CSF. The most significant event under the academic aspect is the Lecture Spinelli, which takes place once a year and consists of a lectio magistralis a world-famous celebrities on a topic concerning Europe and the federalism. This lecture comes from the idea of ​​appointing a conference on special topics related to the European integration process by Spinelli, one of the fathers of European federalism.
