Centule I of Astarac

Centulle I. ( Occitan: Centolh d' Astaragues; † after 1230) was a Count of Astarac. It is believed that he was a son of the Countess Beatrix ( † after 1200) and whose first husband Rodrigo Jiménez († 1191 ). His name suggests a possible relationship to the Counts of Bigorre or the viscounts of Béarn.

Centulle is first mentioned in a document of the Abbey Berdoues from 1211 when Count. In 1219, he defended initially successful, the Count of Toulouse protected town of Marmande against the Knights of the Albigensian Crusade under Amaury de Montfort. After this however, by an army of Prince Ludwig ( VIII ) were amplified by France, Centulle had to give up in June 1219 and was captured. The Crusaders perpetrated on a massacre of the indigenous population, in which up to 5,000 people were killed. He spent in Puylaurens His captivity, but was soon released in a prisoner exchange.

In April 1229 Centulle presented to King Louis IX. of fealty from France, on the Count Raymond VII of Toulouse, to pay homage to just about a year. His will is dated in the same period.

Centulle was married to Petronille, a daughter of Count Bernard IV of Comminges and of Mary of Montpellier. Their children were:

  • Bernard III. († 1291 ), Count of Astarac
