Ceol of Wessex

Ceol (also Ceola, Ceolric; † 594/597 ) was from 591 to around 597 or 588-594 King of Gewissæ, an ethnic group as the " West Saxons " the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex was formed in the late 7th century.

Life

Ceol comes from the House of Wessex, and is the son of Cutha (also Cuthwulf ) and grandson of Cynric. The reign of his uncle Ceawlin apparently ended with riots in the royal house. To 588/591 Ceol came to power and Ceawlin was for a " great massacre " in Wôdnesbeorg ( at Wansdyke or Alton Priors, Wiltshire ) sold. To 592/593 died Ceawlin and his otherwise unknown putative relatives Cwichelm and Crida. After the death Ceawlins waned supremacy of Gewissæ. Aethelberht of Kent, who by his marriage alliance with the Frankish Empire, Europe had been received at the time most powerful state, gained influence. About Céols five -or six- year-rule, no further details are known. He died in 594 / 597th Was succeeded by his brother Ceolwulf ( 594/597-611 ), then on the Céols son Cynegils ( 611-642 ) was followed.

Some Problems are Céols Name: Typically, it is equated with Ceolric, viewed as a brother of his successor Ceolwulf and as a father whose successor Cynegils. The fact that Ceolwulf had a son named Cynegils, however, held for confusion Céols and Ceolwulfs, whose " Call Name " also " Ceol / Ceola " may have gelautet by medieval writers.
