Rib banded snail ( Cepaea vindobonensis )

The Rib banded snail ( Cepaea vindobonensis ) is the most common type of eastern European Cepaea.

Features

The case of Cepaea vindobonensis has a regularly ribbed surface. The mouth lip is colored light brown and faded towards the seam. In contrast to the garden snail ( Cepaea hortensis ) is the case of less bright color, whitish to yellow. The strong dark bands stand out clearly against the housing base color, the top two bands are much paler than the rest. The navel is, as with all banded snails, covered. The width of the housing is 20 to 25 mm and the height 17 to 21 mm; there are 5 ½ to 6 whorls present.

The soft body is characteristic yellowish, the sensor dark brownish.

Habitat and Distribution

The snail occurs in sparse bushes and undergrowth, to steppe and rocky slopes, plains and warm in hill countries.

The scientific name of ribbed banded snail, Cepaea vindobonensis reads, literally, " Viennese snail ". In fact, the range of such eastern European Cepaea but extends over the eastern Alps, the entire area of the Carpathians, the Balkan peninsula to Thessaly and the northern Black Sea region, in the north almost to the Baltic Sea.

Conservation

According to the Nature Conservation Ordinance of the city of Vienna, the ribbed banded snail ( Cepaea vindobonensis ) is under strict protection, may not be so collected.
