Cernavodă

Cernavoda is a city in Romania in the region of Dobrogea, Constanta county. Cernavoda has about 17,000 inhabitants ( 2011) and lies on the Danube at the beginning of the Danube-Black Sea Canal. The city's name is derived from the Bulgarian черна вода, which means " black water ".

The city is served by Romania's A2 motorway between Bucharest and Constanta. The nuclear power plant Cernavoda is the only nuclear power plant in Romania.

The city is the site where the characteristic terracottas of Hamangia culture (4800-4300 BC) and named after the later Cernavoda culture (4000-3200 BC). In ancient times the city existed Axsuipolis which led over Durostolum and novae after Viminacium and Sirmium on the Danube route of Troesmis. It is also near the Via pontica was. The original Dacian name of the city was Axíopa, it also means " black water ".
