Cerro de las Ánimas

The Cerro de las Animas ( German: Hills of souls, formerly known as Mirador Nacional) is the second highest point of Uruguay. The summit is at an altitude of 501 meters. It is located in the southwest of the department of Maldonado in the town of Piriapolis and belongs to the hills of the Sierra de las Animas.

History

By 1973, the Cerro de las Animas was considered a highest point of Uruguay. This year, however took the " Servicio Militar Geográfico " re- measurements before and changed the altitude of Cerro Catedral on todays valid altitude of 514 meters, making this officially became the highest elevation of the country.
