Cethegus

Cethegus (also Cetegus ( Cic. Orator 160), Greek Κέθηγος ) was a Roman cognomen which is attested from the 3rd century BC. It is the nickname of Cornelii Lentuli, allegedly because the family refused to wear the tunic, but also appears at the gene Rufia on ( Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus ). Between the republican and the imperial name makers in the Corneliern the relationship is unclear.

In inscriptions Cethegus is attested as a family name.

Cethegus also means a figure of Felix Dahn's historical novel A Struggle for Rome. It is based on the historical Rufius Petronius Nicomachus Cethegus. He is depicted as dominant Roman counter- figure to the kings of the Goths, who wants to play the Goths and Ostrom against each other to gain control of Italy itself.
