Cetostearyl alcohol

Cetostearyl alcohol (also Stearolum, CTFA, or Cetearyl Alcohol ) is a common name for a mixture of alcohols, cetyl alcohol ( hexadecanol ) and stearyl alcohol ( octadecanol ). Since the two components are commonly prepared by reduction of the corresponding fatty acids, these alcohols are also referred to as fatty alcohols. They can also be obtained, for example, by hydrolysis of waxes. Cetylstearyl alcohol is used in a variety of pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations, increases the stability of the emulsions and improve the texture of the preparations. In pharmaceutical preparations Cetylstearylalkohol replaced often the spermaceti, the use of the authorities refused to protect the sperm and is no longer in monografiert Pharmacopoeia since 1978.
