Canadian Forces Base Bagotville (IATA: YBG, ICAO: CYBG ), (in short: CFB Bagotville ), is a Canadian Air Force base about ten kilometers west of the city of Saguenay in the Province of Québec. This is one of two Air Force bases in Canada, where permanent combat aircraft of the type CF-18 Hornet are stationed. The airport is operated by the Royal Canadian Air Force. On the base of the headquarters of the 3rd Wing stationed.

The airport also serves as a civilian airport. The airfield was classified by the NAV CANADA as airport of entry and is equipped with officials of the Canada Border Services Agency ( CBSA). The airport is served by smaller civil machines.

History

At the height of the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Air Force ( RCAF ) Areas visited in the waters close to were and were relatively uninhabited. There are several airfields emerged who used the armed forces. The Royal Canadian Air Force chose the location because it was largely isolated, was very easy to reach by water and had a railway connection. On February 1, the branches of the armed forces, the Royal Canadian Navy, Army and Air Force were merged. This led to the renaming of the base at CFB Bagotville.

Towards the end of 1968, 410 Squadron was set up which flight training conducted for the armed forces. In September 1969, the 433 " Porc Épic " Squadron was set up, which flew the CF -116 Freedom Fighter. In 1982, the 410 Squadrom was transferred to CFB Cold Lake, which there replaced the 434 " Bluenose " Squadron.

On 1 July 1984, the 425 Squadron received the first CF -188 Hornet fighter aircraft, which replaced the CF -101 Voodoo. On 9 July 1985, 434 Squadron was moved to CFB Chatham. In 1986 the Squadron were restructured and reactivated in 1988 and fully equipped with CF -188 Hornet fighter aircraft.

On 1 April 1993 CFB Bagotville was the headquarters of the 3rd Wing, as well as responsible for all units that were stationed at the airfield. On the same day, the "Tiger" Squadron was reformed and was given new aircraft including helicopters CH -146 Griffons.

In July 1996, the units stationed at the base have supported the civilian rescue units in case of flooding. On 1 March 1999, the 12 Radar Squadron was placed on CFB Bagotville, which took over the tactical control tasks of combat aircraft. This system triggers the old plant from RCAF Station Mont Apica on, which was closed.

Present use

Today at CFB Bagotville are over 40 CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft and helicopters, and the following Squadrons stationed units:

  • 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron (CF -18 Hornet )
  • 439 Combat Support Squadron ( search and rescue )
  • 3 Air Maintenance Squadron
  • 12 Radar Squadron
  • 10 Field Technical Training Squadron (CFB Cold Lake detachment )

In Bagotville is also the 414 Electronic Warfare Support Squadron, which is stationed since January 2009, there. The Squadron is headquartered in Ottawa and is equipped with military Electronic Warfare Officers flying on civil leased aircraft.

CFB Bagotville on the Bagotville Air Cadet Summer Training takes place. Cadets of the Air Force come from the entire country to a variety of courses, such as the two-week basic course to attend six-week Survival Instructors Course.

More aircraft are stationed at the airfield, the Alpha Jets which are used for Canadian Forces jet training program.

The airport is served by civilian airlines Jazz Air, CanJet, Sunwing Airlines and Aviation Pascan with smaller machines.
