Chad Oliver

Symmes Chadwick Oliver ( born March 30, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio; † August 10, 1993 in Austin, Texas) was an American science fiction and Western writer.

Life

Even as a young Oliver was interested in science-fiction literature, appeared in 1939 for the first time a letter from him in a fanzine. 1943 the family moved to Crystal City, Texas, where Oliver made ​​his high school graduation.

Oliver studied since 1946 at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA ) English and anthropology, he graduated in 1952 from both compartments with the master. His thesis in English dealt scientifically with science fiction.

In 1959 he became an assistant professor of anthropology, in 1968 a full professor at UTA. From 1967 to 1971, from 1980 to 1985 he was chairman of the Anthropology Department. In 1961 he graduated from the UCLA his doctorate with a thesis on cultural tradition and social structure among the Indians of the Great Plains. In addition to the Indian culture, he worked as a research staff of Walter Goldschmidt in Kenya over the Kamba. He received several awards for his teaching. After his death the Chad Oliver Honors Program Scholarship ( Chad Oliver Honors Scholarship ) was established by the College of Liberal Arts of the UTA.

1948 Oliver appeared first science fiction short story, 1950, he was able to sell the first story. His most famous novel Mists of the Dawn (English humanity Dawn ) was published in 1952. Overall, he wrote more than 60 SF short stories, plus several novels. 1958 appeared his first Western short story. For his Western The Wolf is My Brother, he received the 1967 Award track.

Oliver was married to Betty Jane Jenkins since November 1, 1952, had two children.

Oliver was a jazz pianist and avid fly fisherman.
