Chadan (town)

Tschadan (Russian Чадан; Tuvan Чадаана, Tschadaana ) is a city in the Autonomous Republic of Tuva ( southern Siberia, Russia) with 9035 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the Tuva depression between Westsajan and Tannu - Ola Mountains, about 225 km west of the capital of Republic of Kyzyl, the river Tschadan, a right tributary of the opening into the Yenisei Chemtschik. The climate is highly continental.

The city is the administrative center of the Tschadan Koschuun ( Rajons ) DSUN - Chemtschik.

Tschadan is on the road A162 Kyzyl - Ak - Dowurak.

History

A settlement on site of the present city Tschadan has been known since 1873. In 1945, after the annexation of Tuva to the Soviet Union, the city was granted city rights. Tschadan referred to Tuvan niedrigwüchsiges bushland.

Culture and sights

In Tschadan there is a small museum with a focus on ethnography and local history.

In the village the World Music Festival Ustuu - Khuree is held annually ( Устуу - Хурээ ), named after the nearby Buddhist monastery, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century and destroyed in Soviet times, but it should be rebuilt.

Economy
