Ch’ae Man-sik

Ch'ae Man-sik or Ch'ae Man- shik ( born June 17, 1902 in Okkugun today Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do, † June 11, 1950 in Seoul) was a South Korean writer, essayist, and playwright.

Life

Ch'ae Man-sik was born when Korea was under Japanese rule. After graduating from high school, he Chungang studied English literature at Waseda University in Japan. Later he worked as a journalist for newspapers such as Dong -a Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo.

In 1924 he appeared with the publication of his short story Segillo (translated: On three paths ). His work dealt critically with the Perpektivlosigkeit Korean intellectuals in a society under Japanese repression, such as in the narrative Redimeideu insaeng (translated: A ready to use life ) which appeared in the journal Shindonga 1934. A major characteristic of his often satirical style is the use of irony and sarcasm, especially in the My innocent uncle much attention has been paid.

1938 Ch'ae was arrested and released on condition to participate in the Japanese literary organization Literary Society of patriotism and pro-Japanese propaganda was forced to submit to journals. By this he sat down after the liberation of Korea also on literary self-critical way apart, eg in Minjokui chwein ( 민족 의 죄인, translated sinners of the nation ). In 1936, he devoted himself for a move to Kaesong entirely to literary writing.

In 1950, he succumbed to his tuberculosis disease.
