Chafariz das Virtudes
The Chafariz the Virtudes (also Fonte das Virtudes, Fonte do Rio Frio ) is a Baroque wall fountain in the district Miragaia the Portuguese city of Porto.
History
In 1619 the Council of the city of Porto commissioned the construction of the Fonte do Rio Frio, later renamed the Virtudes in Fonte. With the fountain, the water of the Rio Frio and various mines for local residents should be harnessed. As an architect Pantaleão de Seabra e Sousa was responsible, Fidalgo of the Royal House and Mayor ( Regedor ) of the city.
In June 1910 the fountain of the status of Monumento Nacional was granted.
Description
The system consists of a high gable which concludes with the royal arms, in the middle of a - now empty - niche for a statue of Nossa Senhora das Virtudes.
