Chamamé

The Chamamé (even polka Correntina ) is a style of folk music of Argentina. It is particularly common in the province of Corrientes.

Musically speaking, it is the Chamamé to a dance in 6/8, which is very similar to the polka.

The style originated in colonial times, when the Jesuits were trying to proselytize the Guarani Indians. Since many Jesuits were from Eastern Europe, the dances and music styles of this popular region - especially the polka - even in the Jesuit reductions in South America. The indigenous population mixed these influences with their own music, the Chamamé can be regarded as a result of this process. A well-known musicians of the Chamamé is the accordionist Raúl Barboza.
