Change request

A change request referred to in change management projects a formalized desire to change the properties of a particular product feature. Each change request should be evaluated, decided and communicated in a controlled process.

Features

A change request should have the following characteristics:

  • The description of the product feature that is to be changed
  • The description of the product feature that is to be produced
  • The rationale for the change ( motivation)
  • The affected product version
  • The date of the desired implementation
  • The date of creation of the change request
  • The creator of the change request
  • An estimate of the change ( possibly based on internal and external costs, license costs, personnel costs, etc. )
  • A time estimate for the requested change (possibly separated by designing, developing, testing, etc. )

A change request can only be released together in contractual relationships between client and contractor. In this case, it becomes a part of the contract.

Synonyms

The following terms are used interchangeably in practice:

  • Amendment, abbreviation AEA
  • Engl. Change Request, abbreviation CR
  • Engl. Request For Change, abbreviation RFC; RFC is also used in ITIL and PRINCE2
  • Change Notice
  • Action Request (AR)

Depending on the nature of the change various requirements can be distinguished substantially describe the same concept:

  • Engineering Change ( EC )
  • Engl. Engineering Change Request (ECR), engineering change request
  • Program or process or Product Change Request ( PCR)

Engineering Change Order (ECO) is a separate step after the ECR. Is an ECR approved an ECO to implement the change is created.

Examples

Examples of software development:

  • Change requests technical nature: When testing a toll system is found that the odometer runs backwards when the vehicle is due to a construction site on the opposite lane. The customer therefore provides the developer a change request.
  • Change requests information processing of a technical nature: A customer has the intention to convert the entire computerized his company from Windows XP to Windows 7. This is the software developers who are currently developing an application for this company informed. The developers need to make changes that ensure that the application on Windows 7 works.
