Chanonat

Chanonat is a commune with 1617 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It is located about 12 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand. Besides Chanonat include the villages Jussat and Varennes to the community.

Population

The population has been increasing since the 60s back to stable. Chanonat changing strengthened into a residence for commuters to the nearby city of Clermont- Ferrand, but also maintains its rural character.

Geography

The medieval village Chanonats extends along the banks of the River Auzon between the plateau de la Serre and Gergovie. To the north of the village center extend the new residential area.

The village lies between Jussat La Roche Blanche, Opme and about 1.5 kilometers away Chanonat on a hill.

The village of Varennes is located a few kilometers west of Chanonat on the edge of the former RN 89 (now D2089 ) from Clermont -Ferrand to Bordeaux.

History

From the Gallic War under Julius Caesar, the settlement " Canonis Acum " is known, later referred to as " Cannonagus ".

In the Middle Ages Chanonat belonged to the Knights Templar or the Order of Malta.

Policy

Mayor of the town was from 1932 to 1947 Edmond Giscard d' Estaing, father of former French President Valéry Giscard d' Estaing.

Attractions

The village center has a few buildings from the time of the order of knighthood, including the " Commandery " and the " Priory ". From the shores of Auzon offers a beautiful view of the medieval town system.

At the eastern exit of the village stands the castle Varvasse, owned by Valéry Giscard d' Estaing. The glass guard in front of the castle is occupied, when the former president is staying in his estate.

One kilometer west of Chanonat stands the castle of La batisse. The returning to the 13th century castle has magnificent gardens along the Auzon.

Above Jussat there are several of bats lived in caves.

About 2 kilometers east of Varennes is located in a forest, the rock labyrinth " Chaos de Flore ".
