Province

Chanthaburi ( Thai: จันทบุรี, pronunciation: [ t͡ɕant ʰ Aburi ː ], usually only called by the inhabitants Mueang Chan ) is the capital of the province of Chanthaburi. The Chanthaburi province is located in the eastern part of the central region of Thailand. Chanthaburi is also the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Chanthaburi.

Etymology

The name comes from Sanskrit चन्द्र ( candra, "moon " ) and पुर ( pura, " city "). The popular name เมือง จันทร์ ( Mueang Chan) also means " moon city ".

Geography

Chanthaburi is located in the south-eastern Thailand on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the middle of the fertile plain of the Maenam Chanthaburi. The distance to the capital Bangkok is about 245 kilometers.

Many Christian Vietnamese have settled here, their influence is felt. On the southern side are the old fortifications that should protect the sea.

History

Chanthaburi is a very old settlement of Khmer, probably from the 9th century. In the 14th century the city came to Ayutthaya and was used as a trading center and seaport. After the destruction of Ayutthaya, the local prince tried to become independent of Siam. The later King Taksin made ​​on his re- conquest in 1767 short work and had him executed.
