Life

First, a professor of literature in Paris, he discovered his passion for botany in 1835 and published magazines Jardin Fleuriste and L' Horticulteur universal. As a specialist for cacti and succulents, he wrote many books on these subjects. He has identified numerous ways, for example the Schlumbergera. From 1845, he worked in Belgium and there published the magazines Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe, later L' illustration horticole. His aim was to improve the illustration of plants and complete the monograph of the family Cactaceae.

After Lemaire named taxa

The plant genus Lemaireocereus from the cactus family ( Cactaceae ) has been named in his honor. This genus is, however, resolved today; the representatives of the former genus have been added to other genres such as Pachycereus, Heliabravoa, Machaerocereus, Polaskia and Stenocereus. The Australian genus of the subfamily Maireana the goosefoot ( Chenopodioideae ) within the family of Amaranthaceae ( Amaranthaceae ) is named in his honor.
