Charles Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak

Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke ( born June 3, 1829 in Somerset, † May 7, 1917 ) was the second of the White Rajas of Sarawak on Borneo.

Life

Charles was born in Somerset as Charles Anthoni Johnson, son of Francis Charles and Emma Frances Johnson, the younger sister of James Brooke, and thus as the nephew of the first White Raja of Sarawak. Since his uncle James Brooke had no children, he initially identified the brother of Charles, his successor as King of Sarawak. James Brooke, however, later revised his opinion, so that was appointed to succeed him in 1865 Charles Anthoni Johnson Charles Johnson Brooke. After the death of his uncle (1868 ), he took over as the second White Raja rule over Sarawak.

Brooke continued the work of his uncle and continued to fight against piracy and headhunting Iban. At the same time he promoted trade and enlarged the sphere of the white rajas. The huge forest area of ​​Sarawak and the oil deposits were personal property of the Brooke family. On October 28, 1869 he married Margaret Alice Lili de Windt, the Rani. With his death (1917 ) the country of Sarawak was a protectorate of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. His son and successor, Charles Vyner Brooke, the third white Raja was marketed by the Japanese army during World War II in 1942 and returned in 1945 back to Sarawak. 1946 then ended the rule of the white rajas of Borneo, when Charles Vyner Brooke, the rule gave the British over Sarawak. Later Sarawak became part of the Federation of Malaysia.
