Charles Christian Erdmann, Duke of Württemberg-Oels

Charles Christian Erdmann von Württemberg- Oels ( born October 26, 1716 in Wilhelminenort in Bernstadt, † December 14, 1792 in Oels) was reigning Duke of Württemberg- Bernstadt and Oels.

Life

Origin

Charles Christian Erdmann was the only son of Duke Christian Ulrich II von Württemberg- Wilhelminenort (1691-1734) from his marriage to Philippine Charlotte (1691-1758), daughter of Count Erdmann von Rederns on Krappitz. The Württemberg were passed through the marriage of the Duke Sylvius Nimrod I. with the heiress Elisabeth Marie of the family of Podiebrad to the Silesian Duchy of oil. Sylvius Nimrod's sons had the land divided into lines oil which Bernstadt and Julius castle. Charles Christian Erdmann was a grandson of the founder of Bernstadt line Christian Ulrich I

Career

The Prince was trained in oil which Stuttgart and at the University of Tübingen. He stood first in the imperial military service in the campaign against France, but switched to bypass at the request of the mother and to a change of confession, in the Danish army. 1736 Danish Major General of Cavalry. Charles Christian Erdmann was in high favor of the Danish king, and in 1739 commander of the Royal Guard. He wore the Danish Elephant Order and the Ordre de l'union parfaite. After the death of Christian VI. of Denmark, he returned in 1747 after Oels back; appointed by King Frederick II of Prussia to lieutenant general, he was governor of Breslau and received the Black Eagle.

In 1744, Karl Friedrich II, the uncle Charles Christian Erdmann had renounced in favor of his nephew as the reigning Duke of oil. A year later died Duke Charles of Württemberg- Bernstadt without heirs, so that Charles Christian Erdmann united all three lines of the Silesian House of Württemberg back in his person. The Duke died as the last of his race. With the Duchy Oels his son was a fief. Charles Christian Erdmann was buried in the city named after him Carlsruhe.

Carlsruhe

According to legend, Charles Christian Erdmann had lost in 1745 at a hunting and fell asleep in the forest. He dreamed to found a town at this point. By 1945, fathered a monument, the so-called Erdmann star of this event. First, a hunting seat, was created in 1763 as planned residential city Carlsruhe, in which the Duke remained architecturally to the concept for the system of the Baden city of Karlsruhe.
