Charles Christopher Parry

Charles Christopher Parry ( born August 28, 1823 in Admington, England; † February 20, 1890 in Davenport, Iowa) was an American botanist of English descent. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Parry ".

Life and work

1832 Parry moved with his parents to the United States, where the family first settled in New York. He studied medicine at Columbia University and Botany by John Torrey, Asa Gray and George Engelmann. Parry first described the Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii ) and the Soledad pine ( Pinus torreyana ); both he named after his mentors.

As an avid mountaineer him the first ascent of Grays Peak succeeded in 1861. His research archives are located at Iowa State University.

Honors

The plant genus Parry Ella is named after him, also the Parry Peak in Colorado and several other plants, such as the Parry Pinyon.
