Charles Coulston Gillispie

Charles Coulston Gillispie ( born 1918 ) is an American historian of science.

Gillispie grew up in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) and graduated from Wesleyan University ( completion 1940). In 1949 he earned his doctorate at Harvard. From the 1960s he was Professor of the History of Science ( and founder of such a program within the Faculty of Humanities ) at Princeton University ( Dayton - Stockton Professor for the History of Science). He is best known as the editor of the monumental, multi-volume, 1970 to 1980 published Dictionary of Scientific Biography ( Charles Scribner's, New York). For his contribution to the dictionary also his biography of Pierre Simon de Laplace was born. He wrote next to it, especially on French history of science. He published, among others, the graphics of the French encyclopedia of Commerce and Industry of Denis Diderot and others, and occupied himself with Napoleon's Egyptian expedition, in which he re- edited the report of the expedition.

In 1984, he received the George Sarton Medal for History of Science. In 1997, the Balzan Prize he was awarded " for the extraordinary contribution he has made with its imaginative content and precise movements and the publication of his great reference book on the history and philosophy of science ."
