Charles de Viel-Castel

Charles Louis Gaspard Gabriel de Salviac, Baron de Viel - Castel ( born October 14, 1800 Paris, † October 6, 1887 ) was a French historian and diplomat.

Life

De Viel-Castel studied law in Paris and joined the Foreign Ministry in 1818, the diplomatic career in. In 1821 he was attaché, 1825 Secretary of the diplomatic mission in Madrid, 1828 in Vienna and 1829 Sous- Directeur des affaires politiques of the Political Department of the Foreign Ministry. Also under the July Monarchy, he held this post in 1849 and promoted to director there.

After the coup d'état by Louis Napoleon in 1851, he took his leave, and in 1873 a member of the Académie française ( seat 6 ) selected. His brother was the writer Horace de Viel - Castel ( 1802-1864 ).
