Charles E. Clarke

Ezra Charles Clarke ( born April 8, 1790 in Saybrook, Connecticut; † December 29, 1863 in Great Bend, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1849 and 1851 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Ezra Charles Clarke was born about seven years after the end of the Revolutionary War in Saybrook. He completed his studies and then graduated in 1809 at Yale College. He then studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1815 and then began practicing in Watertown. He moved in 1840 to Great Bend in Jefferson County. In 1839 and 1840 he sat in the New York State Assembly. Politically he belonged to the Whig party.

In the congressional elections of 1848 for the 31 Congress Clarke was in the 19th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Joseph Mullin on March 4, 1849. He retired after March 3, 1851 from the Congress.

After his conference time he went back to his work as a lawyer after. He built and operated a flour mill. In addition, he worked in agriculture. On December 29, 1863, he died in Great Bend. His body was then buried in the Brookside Cemetery in Watertown. At that time, civil war raged.
