Charles Grant, 1st Baron Glenelg

Charles Grant, 1st Baron Glenelg ( born October 26, 1778 in India, † April 23, 1866 in Cannes, France) was a Scottish politician.

Life

Charles Grant was the son of Charles Grant, Chairman of the East India Company. He studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he became a Fellow in 1802. In 1807 he was admitted to the bar and elected to the British House of Inverness in the same year.

He gained some reputation as a speaker of the house and was in 1813 appointed a Lord of the Treasury. He held this office until he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1819, the highest official of Ireland and secret Privy Council ( Privy Councillor ). In 1823 he was appointed Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce ( Board of Trade ), from September 1827 to June 1828 he was president of the board ( of Commerce) and Treasurer of the Navy ( Treasurer of the Navy ).

After joining the Whigs, he was President of the Board of Control ( Control Authority ) under the 2nd Earl Grey and Melbourne from November 1830 until November 1834., Where he was primarily responsible for the law of 1833, that the composition Government of India changed.

In April 1835, he was appointed War and Colonial Secretary and the Baron of Glenelg in the County of Inverness. His tenure was very stormy. It had serious differences with Sir Benjamin d' Urban (1777-1849), Governor of the Cape Colony, but more violent were the disputes with William IV and the other on the management of Canada. During his tenure, the rebellions of 1837 were in Canada. His wavering and feeble policy was sharply criticized in Parliament. Especially with the Earl of Durham, he delivered to heated debates. Efforts to replace him, even found among his cabinet colleagues trailer. Lord Glenelg resigned in February 1839 and received to compensate for a pension of 2,000 pounds a year.

The last years of his life were spent largely abroad and died unmarried in 1866 in Cannes. His peerage became extinct.
