Charles Johnston (representative)

Charles Johnston ( born February 14, 1793 in Salisbury, Connecticut, † September 1, 1845 in Poughkeepsie, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1839 and 1841 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Charles Johnston attended community schools. Then he moved to Poughkeepsie. Johnston studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice. Politically, Johnston to the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1838, he was in the fifth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Obadiah Titus on March 4, 1839. In 1840 he suffered in his re-election bid a defeat and retired after the March 3, 1841 from the Congress of. He then worked as a lawyer in Poughkeepsie until his death on September 1, 1845. His body was interred in the cemetery of Christ Episcopal Church in 1861 and reburied in the Rural Cemetery.
