Charles Kittel

Charles Kittel ( born July 18, 1916 in New York) is an American physicist. He was from 1951 professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and is emeritus since 1978.

Life and work

Charles Kittel studied at Cambridge University, England, from which he graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). His dissertation in nuclear physics, he wrote in 1941 at the University of Wisconsin at Gregory Wide. During the Second World War, he was from 1940 to 1942 at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington DC and then headed Submarine Operations Research Group ( Sorg ) of the Operations Research Group of the U.S. Navy. After that, he conducted research from 1945 to 1947 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT) from 1947 to 1951 at Bell Laboratories, New Jersey, USA, where he specifically dealt with the issue of ferromagnetism.

From 1951, he was until his retirement in 1978 professor at the University of California, Berkeley. There, he taught and conducted research in the field of solid state physics. He is known for his textbook on solid state physics.

According to him, Malvin Ruderman and others, the RKKY interaction is named.

He has been married since 1938 and has three children.
