Charles Mathiesen

Charles Arthur Mathiesen ( born February 12, 1911 in Drammen, Buskerud, † 7 November 1994 ) was a Norwegian speed skater.

His career lasted from 1930 to 1948 a total of 18 years. The highlight of his career was winning the gold medal in the 1500 meters at the 1936 Olympic Games in Garmisch -Partenkirchen.

Mathiesen was 1938 all-around European Champion. On 3 March 1940 he was able to establish a new world record time in the 10,000 meters with 17:01.5 minutes.

He was held by the Second World War to achieve even more success. His last major competition was the 5000 meter run at the 1948 Olympic Games in St. Moritz, but where he had to give up because of breathing problems because of the large amount.
