Charles Peterson (photographer)

Charles Peterson (born 1964 ) is an American photographer.

Most album covers of grunge bands in the late 80s to mid-90s from the area Seattle adorns a photograph by Charles Peterson. The Seattle label Sub Pop then pursued a concept in the artistic design of their publications: The photos were taken by Charles Peterson, the design in terms of music took over as producer Jack Endino, otherwise the plates were kept very simple, some were not even the noted names of the musicians.

Life

Charles Peterson grew up in a suburb of Seattle and learned about Mark Arm (later singers only at Green River, then at Mudhoney ) to a co-founder of Sub Pop Bruce Pavitt know in order to be then formed a circle of artists, promoters and punk fans who formed the basis for the extremely soon expanding Seattle grunge scene.

Most photos were taken during live performances of the bands that Charles Peterson in one hand and a beer, had shot right in front of the stage in the others the camera. The photos are mostly in black and white; blurred and blurred by long exposure times, they reflect both the energy and movements of the musicians and the crowd during the performance, as well as melancholic and depressive mood of the music.

The documentary about the Seattle music scene is in the form of a photo book with a foreword by Michael Azerrad and a CD in 1995 on German under the title "Screaming Life - A Chronicle of the music scene of Seattle " appeared.
