Charles Van Riper

Charles Gage Van Riper ( b. 1905 in Champion Township, Marquette County, Michigan, † September 25, 1994 in Kalamazoo ) was an American speech pathologist and is considered the founder of the American Speech Therapy. He was one of the most famous experts in the field of stuttering and has shaped the landscape permanently therapy.

Life

Charles Van Riper, known in his family as " Cully " was the son of the physicist " Dr.Van ". He was of the age of two to stutterers. He was at the University of Iowa student of Lee Edward Travis, who set the Lateralisierungshypothese of stuttering along with Samuel Torrey Orton. In 1936, Van Riper was hired at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo to teach speech therapy. Here he founded a hospital and remained until his retirement in 1976 there. The now very common form of treatment of stuttering modification ( non - avoidance approach or Van Riper therapy called ) with the four treatment phases identification, desensitization, modification and stabilization as well as the speaking techniques Pull-Out, Preparatory set and cancellation was developed by Van Riper. In Germany the spread of the therapeutic approach with the release of the translated by Andreas Starke second part of "The Treatment of Stuttering " by the National Association of stuttering and self-help eV was strongly encouraged. Van Riper died after a long illness on September 25, 1994 at his home in Kalamazoo.
