Charleston Naval Shipyard

The Charleston Navy Yard was located on the west bank of the Cooper River construction and repair shipyard in the U.S. Navy in North Charleston, South Carolina. It was founded in 1909 as a dry dock and operated until 1996 by the Navy. It was then leased to the reductions of capacity at Detyens Shipyards, Inc..

The yard produced the first ship to the destroyer USS Tillman (DD -135 ), and expanded production in the 1930s. A total of 21 destroyers were laid in the Charleston Navy Yard at Kiel.

More recently, a 340 acre large area of the former base is being revived as a sustainable hub for the city of North Charleston. The construction project is called The Navy Yard. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 2005.
